Ethos of Scouting

Scouts

When Scouts are invested as members of the Scout Troop they make the following promise, which is also made by all Leaders:

On my honour,

I promise that I will do my best

To do my duty to God and to The Queen,

To help other people

And to keep the Scout Law.

And the Scout Law to which the promise refers is:

1. A Scout is to be trusted.

2. A Scout is loyal.

3. A Scout is friendly and considerate.

4. A Scout belongs to the world-wide family of Scouts.

5. A Scout has courage in all difficulties.

6. A Scout makes good use of time and is careful of possessions and property.

7. A Scout has self-respect and respect for others.

Cub Scouts

The Cub Scout Promise is slightly different and appropriate to the age of Cubs:

I promise that I will do my best To do my duty to God and to The Queen,

To help other people And to keep the Cub Scout Law.

And the Cub Law:

Cub Scouts always do their best, Think of others before themselves And do a good turn every day.

Beaver Scouts. The Beaver Scout Promise is:

I promise to do my best To be kind and helpful And to love God

Beavers

There is no formal Beaver Scout law; Beavers are introduced to the ethos and principles of Scouting through games and discussion.

All members of the Scout movement – both young members and Leaders – renew their Promise annually in late April at our St Georges Day Parade and Service when we march from Arundel Castle to the Cathedral for our service and then march back again. Attendance at this parade is compulsory as is attendance at the Remembrance Sunday Parade in November.

Scouts are not required to belong to any particular faith or religion. Different versions of the Promise are available for Scouts of different faiths or none or who are visitors to this country. Please ask if your son or daughter needs a different version of the promise.
